Industrial windmills along the river Zaan

A short distance north of Amsterdam in the city of Zaanstad you can find one of the greatest treasures of the Netherlands: historic industrial mills which for centuries have used windpower to make all kind of products. Experience for yourself how paint is made, how logs are sawn, paper is made, spices are ground and how oil was extracted. Seven fully operative windmills can be found at the Zaanse Schans alongside a typical Dutch village with authentic historic houses and where trades of yesteryear are still practiced.

A visit to the mills, the Windmill Museum and the Zaanse Schans is not only enjoyable but informative and educational for young and old. De Zaansche Molen (Society of Zaan Windmills) is the owner of 13 historic industrial windmills and the Windmill Museum. They are spread over the entire Zaan region. Seven are located at the Zaanse Schans.

We invite you to take a journey through time and visit our mills.

Here you can take a virtual 360 degrees walk to our new Windmill museum.
